Stress relieving annealing is suitable for commercially pure titanium and titanium alloys after hot and cold working. Annealing is also applied to restore or recrystallize the deformed microstructure. Therefore, annealing is effective for stabilizing the microstructure and size of treated products, improving cutting performance and mechanical properties.
Like other titanium alloys, the corrosion resistance of Ti 64 alloy is based on the presence of a consistent and continuous oxide layer that forms spontaneously upon exposure to oxygen. It has excellent corrosion resistance in seawater, making it ideal for offshore and subsea oil and gas operations where seawater corrosion and weight are a concern.
The properties of 6Al-4V were compared with those of 316 stainless steel. Recommended practices include high coolant flow (to counteract the low thermal conductivity of the material), low speeds and relatively high feed rates.
This alloy can be hot formed or cold formed. Popular methods include hydraulic, stretching or drop hammer. The response of this material is similar to that of 300 series stainless steel.
Titanium is commonly used as a material for press-formed products due to its potential for cold bending and press-forming. Formability differs depending on the type of titanium alloy. The forming method used is the same as that of stainless steel, mainly pressing forming methods such as bending, deep drawing, stretching, and spinning. Under solution treatment conditions, titanium alloys can be cold formed. The post-forming titanium alloy can be subjected to aging treatment, and the strength can reach 1300-1500MPa.
Thermoforming will reduce spring back and required forming forces, and increase the overall ductility of the material.
The cold working properties of this material are similar to those of austenitic stainless steels. During multiple forming operations, intermediate stress relief is recommended to counteract the work-hardening tendency of the alloy. Post-treatment annealing is required.
