Fusion is best performed in the reducing flame of the burner, with little or no corrosion or oxidation of the crucible, regardless of the sample material or flux mixture.
For melting, the sample is mixed with 4 to 10 times its weight in flux and placed on a bed of flux in a crucible. The burner unit should be under a fume hood and placed under a tripod. Initially, the crucible and contents should be placed gently over the flame, moving it in and out as melting begins. When melting, the heat can be raised and the contents "swirled" to prevent the sample from going to the bottom - use any stainless steel tongs to grip the crucible and complete the swirling motion, which should continue throughout the melting process.
When melted, it's either clear/homogeneous or very bright red at which point fusion is complete. The molten substance can be allowed to solidify in the crucible. The crucible and contents can then be placed in a beaker covered with water and a suitable solvent added to remove molten material from the crucible. Any material that sticks to the crucible can be dissolved away with more solvent. Under these conditions, only a few milligrams of zirconium would be introduced into the sample. If this trace needs to be removed, it can be done with a strong acid solution.

35ml zirconium crucibles are suitable for many applications in analytical chemistry.
Sodium Peroxide Melt - Used with refractory or high silicon materials such as chromates, magnetite, ilmenite, silica, silicon, silicon carbide, and certain alloys and steels. Excellent general purpose flux for almost any material.
Sodium Carbonate Melt - Decomposes most silicates of aluminum, calcium, chromium, nickel; also halides of silver; sulfates of barium and lead.
Lithium Salt Melts - Fluxes for oxide and silicate materials when determination of sodium and potassium is required or when large amounts of sodium would interfere with X-ray fluorescence or atomic absorption procedures.
