How Much Do You Know About Titanium Powder?

Titanium powder has long been used as an alloying additive for various applications. Recent technological advancements in the production and use of titanium powders have opened doors for many fields such as powder metallurgy, thermal spraying, laser cladding, metal injection molding and additive manufacturing.

AmeriTi Manufacturing uses the hydride-dehydrogenation (HDH) process to produce titanium powder. This method uses hydrogen to make the titanium brittle enough to be crushed and initially sized. The hydrogen is then removed under vacuum and final size adjustments are made to customer specifications. This process produces a final particle morphology described as lumpy or angular.

AMC also has the ability to deoxidize titanium alloy powders. Titanium is extremely reactive with oxygen, causing it to inevitably increase oxygen throughout the powder manufacturing process. Our patented deoxidation process allows for oxygen levels possibly below 1000 PPM, which is required for grades such as Ti 6Al-4V ELI. Deoxidation services are performed on titanium powders produced by AmeriTi, but are also available as a fee-based machining service.

Using this process, AmeriTi is able to produce commercially pure and alloyed titanium powders of various particle sizes. The screening and mixing process ensures accurate sizing to customer specifications. Advanced process controls and in-process testing allow for consistent particle size distribution and morphology from batch to batch.
