Anode Materials and Applications
1. Titanium and Titanium Alloys
• TA1, TA2, TA9, TA10
• Characteristics: Corrosion resistant, lightweight, easy to form; titanium is used as the substrate in almost all electroplating, electrolysis, and water treatment processes.
• Applications: Electroplating anodes, chlor-alkali electrolysis, wastewater treatment, seawater desalination
2. Platinum (Pt)
• Characteristics: Extremely stable, insoluble
• Applications: High-end electrolysis, analytical electrodes, medical electrodes
3. Iridium (Ir), Ruthenium (Ru), Rhodium (Rh)
• Characteristics: Precious metals with extremely strong catalytic activity.
• Applications: Combined with titanium to form titanium-based coated anodes.
4. Lead/Lead Alloys (Pb)
• Traditional anodes, inexpensive but heavy and toxic.
• Applications: Old-fashioned electrolysis, zinc plating.
5. Stainless Steel
• Only usable under weak corrosion and low current conditions.
• Easily passivated and corroded; unsuitable for long-term anode applications.
6. Aluminum, Copper, Iron
• I. Titanium Anodes: Absolutely unsuitable for use as anodes; they will dissolve, corrode, and contaminate the bath solution upon energization.
II. Most Commonly Used in Industry: Titanium-Based Coated Anodes (DSA Anodes)
These anodes are coated with precious metal oxides on a titanium substrate. Currently, 90% of anodes use this method.
• Titanium-based ruthenium-iridium coating: Resistant to chlorine and chlorine evolution; used in electroplating, wastewater treatment, and chlor-alkali applications.
• Titanium-based iridium-tantalum coating: Resistant to acid and oxygen evolution; used in hard chrome plating, water electrolysis, and acidic environments.
• Titanium-based platinum coating: High-end precision electrolysis.
III. Non-Metallic Anode Materials
• Graphite: Electrolysis, batteries, electroplating.
• Carbon electrodes: Low-end, inexpensive, and easily worn out.
• Ceramic electrodes: Special high-temperature electrolysis.
Main Uses of Titanium Anodes (Titanium-Based DSA Anodes)

• Copper plating, nickel plating, zinc plating, gold plating, silver plating, tin plating
• Decorative electroplating, barrel plating, rack plating, continuous electroplating
• Features: Insoluble, does not contaminate the plating solution, long lifespan
Commonly used: Titanium-based ruthenium-iridium, platinum, iridium-tantalum
2. Chromium Plating Anodes
• Hard chrome, decorative chrome
• Resistant to strong acids, resistant to high current
Specialized: Titanium-based platinum, iridium-tantalum coating
3. Wastewater Treatment / Environmental Electrolysis
• Electrocoagulation, electrocatalytic oxidation, electrolytic decolorization, COD removal
• Swimming pool water, circulating water sterilization
