Product Description:
As a high-performance, corrosion-resistant vessel for laboratory and industrial use, the zirconium crucible plays a vital role in high-temperature chemical analysis and metallurgy. Thanks to zirconium's exceptionally high melting point and superior resistance to acid and alkali corrosion, it serves as an ideal vessel for many demanding chemical reactions.
Zirconium crucibles are widely used for sample preparation and high-temperature melting processes across sectors such as geology, metallurgy, the chemical industry, environmental protection, scientific research, and the nuclear industry.
Alkali fusion (primary application): In the analysis of geological minerals or ceramic materials, many minerals (such as silicates, zircon, and chromite) are highly resistant to dissolution in common acids. Analysts typically need to fuse samples at high temperatures using alkaline fluxes such as sodium peroxide, sodium carbonate , or sodium hydroxide . Zirconium crucibles are the ideal vessels for this type of alkali fusion.
Rare and precious metal melting: Zirconium crucibles can be used to melt high-purity rare metals, specialty alloys, and certain superconducting materials under vacuum or inert gas protection.
High-temperature thermal analysis: Used as micro-containers for holding samples in certain high-temperature thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) or differential thermal analysis (DTA) applications.

Key Functions and Advantages of Zirconium Crucibles
**Highly Cost-Effective Alternative to Expensive Platinum Crucibles:**
While platinum crucibles offer excellent performance, they are extremely expensive and susceptible to damage—or "poisoning"—by low-melting-point metals such as lead, zinc, and bismuth. Zirconium crucibles cost significantly less than platinum ones yet rival or even surpass platinum in resistance to alkaline flux corrosion under specific conditions, making them an excellent, low-cost alternative.
**Superior Resistance to Corrosion by Alkali Metal Fluxes:**
At high temperatures ranging from 500°C to 800°C, strong oxidizing alkaline fluxes (such as peroxides) aggressively corrode glass, quartz, porcelain, and even nickel crucibles. In contrast, when heated in air, the zirconium surface rapidly forms a dense, highly stable protective film of zirconium dioxide. This renders the crucible highly inert to molten alkalis, ensuring minimal dissolution of the crucible material itself.
**Ensuring Analytical Accuracy (Low Contamination):**
Thanks to their corrosion resistance, the trace amounts of zirconium introduced during the fusion process do not interfere with the determination of most common elements (such as silicon, aluminum, iron, calcium, and magnesium). This is crucial for the precise chemical analysis of minor and trace elements.
**Long Service Life:**
With proper use (such as strictly controlling fusion temperature and duration), a single zirconium crucible can withstand hundreds of alkali fusion cycles, significantly reducing long-term laboratory operating costs.
Precautions for Using Zirconium Crucibles (Tips to Avoid Pitfalls):
Although zirconium crucibles offer excellent performance, they are not universal in their application; the following points should be noted during use:
Not resistant to strong acids: Zirconium crucibles must never be used with hydrofluoric acid as it rapidly dissolves zirconium and its oxide film。Additionally, aqua regia, concentrated sulfuric acid, and concentrated hydrochloric acid can cause significant corrosion at high temperatures.
Temperature limitations: While the melting point of zirconium is as high as 1855°C, it is recommended that the operating temperature in air not exceed 650°Csim 700°C for extended periods. Excessive temperatures cause over-oxidation, leading to brittleness, flaking, and a shortened service life.
Cleaning methods: After use, residual melt can generally be removed by soaking and heating in dilute hydrochloric acid (1:1 or 1:9). Never use hard brushes or abrasives to scrub the interior, as this could damage the dense protective oxide layer on the surface.
