What makes zirconium threaded rods particularly useful to industry is their resistance to hydrochloric acid, their corrosion rate is less than 5mpy at all concentrations and temperatures above the boiling point. Even in 37% HCI, zirconium fasteners did not begin to show significant corrosion until 130°C (266°F). This performance is unmatched by any other engineering metal or alloy other than tantalum. To give you a point of reference, Hastelloy C276 will experience 288 mpy (mils per year) of corrosion in just 10% boiling HCl, while zirconium threaded rods do not corrode even when aerated. Therefore, zirconium fasteners are most beneficial when used in hydrochloric acid processes at temperatures above boiling and free of oxidative impurities.
General acid resistance In addition to impressive performance in hydrochloric and sulphuric acids, zirconium threaded rods are resistant to temperatures well above boiling and acid concentrations up to 70%. Only another metal, tantalum, is equivalent to zirconium in nitric acid, which can be used in all concentrations up to 90% and at temperatures up to 200°C. Zirconium is also resistant to most organic media and is considered one of the most corrosion resistant materials in almost all acetic acid solutions.
Zirconium is known for its strong resistance to acid corrosion, but its use is not recommended in some cases. Although aeration does not affect the corrosion resistance of zirconium screws, even small amounts of oxidizing media, such as ferric chloride or cupric chloride, can greatly reduce its corrosion resistance. This often occurs in upstream equipment that brings corrosion contaminants into zirconium equipment, so process control of upstream equipment is critical to maintaining zirconium corrosion resistance. In addition, acids in the presence of oxidative halide contaminants can accelerate the attack of zirconium fasteners even at low concentrations. It is also not recommended to use zirconium threaded rods in the presence of fluoride ions, even at low concentrations.
