Zirconium metal is a most effective all-round crucible for fusions using sodium carbonate or sodium peroxide and is an excellent low-cost replacement for platinum. Based on an average of 100 fusions per crucible, zirconium is more cost-effective than less expensive crucibles of porcelain or steel.

Zirconium Crucible Safety and Usage Instructions：

Recommended Working Temperature:
In Air/Oxidizing Atmosphere: Maximum temperature not exceeding 550°C. Above this temperature, the zirconium surface will oxidize and peel off more rapidly.

In Vacuum/Inert Gas: Maximum withstand temperature 1400°C-1500°C.

Key Usage Steps: Before first use of a new crucible, it is recommended to heat it in air to 400°C-450°C and maintain this temperature for 10-20 minutes. This will form a dense, slightly black zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) protective film on the crucible surface. This film greatly enhances the crucible's subsequent corrosion resistance.

Avoid Thermal Shock: Although zirconium has excellent thermal shock resistance, slow heating and cooling are still recommended. Never remove it directly from a high-temperature environment and immerse it in cold water to prevent metal fatigue or minor deformation.
