Zr-2 (Zircaloy-2 alloy) is a nuclear-grade zirconium alloy that is a milestone in the history of nuclear industry development. It was originally developed by the United States in the 1950s for naval nuclear reactors (nuclear submarines) and early commercial nuclear power plants, and it remains the mainstay core structural material of boiling water reactors (BWRs) to this day.

Zr-2 (Zircaloy-2, UNS R60802) is a typical nuclear-grade zirconium-tin alloy, with tin (Sn), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), and nickel (Ni) as its main alloying elements. Due to its superior nuclear physics properties and corrosion-resistant structural characteristics, it is widely used in core components of water-cooled nuclear reactors (especially boiling water reactors, BWRs), such as cladding tubes, grids, and structural bars for fuel assemblies.

1. Extremely Low Thermal Neutron Absorption Cross Section: A key physical property of zirconium is its extremely low thermal neutron cross section.

Zr-2 exhibits strictly controlled levels of strong neutron-absorbing impurities (such as hafnium Hf, typically limited to below tens of ppm).

Significance: This allows neutrons to efficiently penetrate the cladding, maintaining the chain reaction, significantly improving nuclear fuel utilization, and reducing the cost of uranium enrichment.

2. Precise Control of Alloy Microstructure

Through special β-quenching and subsequent hot working processes, uniformly distributed second-phase particles (SPPs, mainly Zr2(Fe, Ni) and Zr(Fe, Cr)2) are formed within the alloy.

These fine second-phase particles play a decisive role in controlling the alloy's corrosion resistance and hydrogen absorption resistance during service.

3. Excellent Mechanical and Machining Properties

High Strength and Low Creep: At nuclear reactor operating temperatures (approximately 300°C), Zr-2 exhibits excellent tensile strength, yield strength, and creep resistance, effectively withstanding the mechanical loads and thermal stresses of fuel assemblies.

Anisotropy: Zirconium has a hexagonal close-packed (HCP) crystal structure. Its texture significantly affects the mechanical properties of the bars, and precise orientation control can be achieved during production through cold rolling and annealing processes.
